Soccer’s Lost Boys, Stranded in Istanbul
Adam McCauley of the NYT and photographer Jason Andrew travel to Istanbul, Turkey to investigate the story behind the lives of 40 Nigerian men whose dreams of entering the world of professional soccer have become marred through a scam of dire proportions.
In March 2010, more than 40 Nigerians flew to Istanbul, carrying an invitation to try out with Turkey’s professional soccer teams. Within a week of arriving, the players realized that the promises had been false, that their money had been stolen and that they had nowhere to go but the streets.
They’ve been there ever since.
