“Icarus” is a call to action that draws on a classic theme in Greek mythology where extreme pride and arrogance result in a loss of contact with reality and ultimately results in a fall.
The poem was written in response to the events leading up to and following the Dana Air Flight 922 crash of June 3, 2012 that resulted in the untimely death of over 150 people.
It is a reminder that our “suffer and smile” mentality will only continue to keep us captive and prevent us from holding wrong doers accountable in our society. In the wake of the Uniport killings, it is yet another reminder that apathy is no longer an option.
