kefifi: Today Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse of the legendary South African group the Beaters is getting his matric results. Last year, at the age of 61, he enrolled and registered to complete his matric at Thaba Jabula Secondary School in Soweto. Thanks to my mother’s connections, I was the first journalist to cover the story. When I interviewed him earlier this year he said that after he fulfils his dream of achieving his matric certificate, a dream he has harboured for almost four decades, he will attempt two more unfulfilled ambitions - to study anthropology at “a university like Fort Hare” and to write a book about African music and cultures.
