Tippu Tip; a Swahili-Zanzibari trader of mixed descent, a notorious slave trader, plantation owner and governor. He led many trading expeditions into East-Central Africa, involving the slave trade.
By 1895, he had acquired “seven shambas [plantations] and 10,000 slaves.
He also met and helped several famous western explorers of the African continent, including Henry Morton Stanley whose legacy of death and destruction in the Congo region is considered an inspiration for Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, detailing atrocities inflicted upon the Africans.
